Possession and use
Adults 21 and older may possess up to 2.5 ounces of usable cannabis or one-quarter ounce of concentrate. Nevada's equivalency chart covers combinations and THC in other products. Public consumption is generally prohibited, although licensed consumption lounges are a specific exception.
Nevada's Cannabis Compliance Board gives a conversion chart for flower mixed with products containing THC. The current ceiling reflects changes effective January 2024, so older one-ounce summaries understate what adults may possess. The quarter-ounce concentrate measure should be evaluated with any flower in the same purchase.
Medical access
Nevada recognizes a nonresident who is authorized to use medical cannabis under the law of their state or jurisdiction of residence. Under NRS 678C.470, that person is treated as holding a valid Nevada registry card for the state medical-use prosecution exemption if they follow Nevada's medical limits. A medical dispensary may dispense to the visitor on presentation of valid proof of that home-jurisdiction authorization.
The statute does not give a list of accepted states. It allows a provider's written documentation when that document itself provides medical-use authorization under the visitor's home law. The Cannabis Compliance Board says reciprocity applies to some state residents and advises checking with the dispensary. Its FAQ says a visiting cardholder may use a passport or a valid state ID matching the card's issuing state. Confirm the precise credential and ID the retailer will accept before visiting; adult-use sales for those 21 or older are a separate route. The Board's separate medical-only sales guidance calls for an active government-issued card, so acceptance of provider-only proof needs confirmation.
Home cultivation
Adults may grow at home only if no licensed retail cannabis store is within 25 miles of the home. The limit is six plants per person and 12 per household, in a locked, enclosed area hidden from public view; the grower must own the property or have owner permission. Medical exceptions require separate verification.
The 25-mile store-distance condition is a prerequisite for ordinary adult home cultivation, not merely advice about where to buy. If a retail store lies within that radius, the adult-use home-grow provision does not apply. Even when eligible, the room or greenhouse needs a lock and plants must be hidden from public view.
Buying legally
The only lawful source for retail cannabis is a Nevada-licensed store, which checks that adult buyers are 21 or older. The board states a retail store may not sell above the 2.5-ounce flower or quarter-ounce concentrate equivalent transaction limit. Medical-only inventory has card controls.
Taxes
Nevada reports a 10% retail excise on adult-use purchases, plus applicable sales tax. Medical-cardholder sales do not bear that 10% retail excise. A separate 15% wholesale excise applies upstream and should not be added again as a simple checkout percentage.
The Board separates the wholesale excise, adult-use retail excise and general sales tax. The fifteen-percent wholesale levy belongs to the first wholesale transaction; the ten-percent retail excise applies to adult-use checkout. Sales-tax rates vary by jurisdiction. A medical cardholder sale is excluded from the ten-percent retail excise.
Travel and transport
A Nevada store purchase should remain within Nevada. The state law allowance cannot legalize carrying cannabis across a border or onto federal land. Consumption in a moving vehicle is forbidden for passengers as well as drivers, and impaired driving is unlawful.
