How the tax works
Alaska imposes no statewide retail sales tax. Its state marijuana tax is charged earlier, when cultivation facilities sell or transfer marijuana to another licensed business; it is not another percentage added directly at checkout. Retail taxes depend on the municipality. A verified $100 purchase inside Anchorage has a 5% marijuana retail tax and totals $105. Inside Juneau, its 5% general sales tax and 3% marijuana tax total $108 on a $100 purchase.
City and borough taxes may stack, and municipalities may restrict retail sales. There is no single safe statewide retail total. For another location, this tool requires a combined local rate checked with the local government or store before it will show a total. It does not model a distinct medical retail tax exemption: Alaska licenses retail marijuana stores rather than separate medical dispensaries. Alaska's current medical registry card does not itself establish a lower retail tax. The calculator is limited to ordinary purchases at or below $50,000; Juneau's sales-tax treatment changes above that amount for a single item.
Use a pretax retail price after discounts, excluding separately stated taxes. Tax-inclusive advertised prices must be converted to a pretax price first. Store fees, delivery charges and receipt rounding can change the amount owed; this estimate does not resolve their tax treatment.
