How the tax works
Michigan adult-use retail excise is 10% of the pretax selling price. The 6% sales tax then applies to the price plus the retail excise. For a $100 adult-use price, that is $10.00 excise, $6.60 sales tax and $116.60 total. An eligible medical purchase has no adult-use excise; the $100 example totals $106.00 with 6% sales tax. Michigan does not permit a local sales tax.
The 24% adult-use wholesale levy effective 1 January 2026 applies earlier in the supply chain. It is not another direct consumer tax to add to the estimate. If a store separately passes through an actual wholesale-tax cost, include that actual amount in the pretax retail-price input; the calculator cannot infer it from a shelf price. Do not add a hypothetical 24%.
Use a pretax retail price after discounts, excluding separately stated taxes. Tax-inclusive advertised prices must be converted to a pretax price first. Store fees, delivery charges and receipt rounding can change the amount owed; this estimate does not resolve their tax treatment.
