What still needs checking
- The current Department of Health FAQ says it does not issue temporary cards; an older registry system page still refers to a temporary 30-day card. Use the current FAQ's visiting-patient approval process and confirm the issued credential with the agency before travel.
- The 4% privilege tax is paid by the marijuana business, not automatically added as a patient receipt percentage. A final checkout total still requires the store's actual selling price and local sales rate.
Possession and use
The Arkansas Department of Health describes a patient purchase allowance of up to 2.5 ounces from dispensaries in a rolling 14-day period. Each purchase affects the balance for the next 14 days; it does not reset on a fixed calendar fortnight. A registered card and compliant dispensary purchase are central to the medical protection. This is not a public adult-use possession allowance.
Arkansas's visiting-patient process is an application, not automatic reciprocity at the checkout counter. The state requires approval before the visitor can buy from a licensed dispensary, and its 2.5-ounce rolling 14-day limit remains relevant after approval. The medical program does not provide a general adult-use exception or a patient grow right. A patient should check registry status and remaining allotment before traveling to a dispensary rather than assuming a physician recommendation alone is enough.
Medical access
Residents need a qualifying condition, a written physician certification and a state registry card. A visitor with an out-of-state medical card or equivalent may apply only if the qualifying condition is also recognized in Arkansas. The health department says approval can take up to 14 days, and an approved visiting card permits purchases for 90 days per application.
Home growing
Registered patients and caregivers may not cultivate medical marijuana. The Department of Health says protected products must be purchased through Arkansas licensed dispensaries. A caregiver card permits helping a patient obtain and administer their supply, not turning the patient’s home into a grow site. No adult-use cultivation permission was verified.
Where to buy
The first Arkansas medical dispensary opened in 2019, and the state regulates current dispensaries through its medical system. A patient should use the state’s license or dispensary information before shopping and retain the original dispensary packaging. The public cannot make adult-use purchases merely by being over 21. Visitors need the Arkansas visiting-patient approval first.
Taxes and price
Arkansas medical marijuana sales carry 6.5% state sales tax plus the city and county sales tax for the dispensary's location. The dispensary or other marijuana business also owes a 4% privilege tax on usable marijuana sales; that business tax is not automatically an extra patient receipt percentage. A 2025 act removed its sunset. For a checkout estimate, start with the store's actual selling price before sales tax, including any seller-added charge, and check the full local sales rate.
Travel and public places
Medical use is restricted in public places, vehicles, schools and other specified locations. A card from another state is an application credential, not automatic dispensary access; wait for Arkansas approval before buying. Do not carry marijuana across state borders, and keep the product in its dispensary packaging while in Arkansas.
